XStream Software Releases Orchestra 4.1, collaboration for people who live in email

Orchestra moves your team beyond email, without leaving your email users behind.

OTTAWA, Canada, April 5, 2007 - XStream Software Inc., a leading provider of advanced software and services for e-learning, content & assessment authoring, streaming media, learning management, and enterprise communication/collaboration, today announced the official release of Orchestra 4.1, the world’s first conversation management server.

Like document management for your corporate conversations, Orchestra provides a single server for all your organization’s electronic communications: instant messaging, group chat, discussion boards, blogs and especially email. The technology is designed to work in the background, capturing conversations taking place within multiple applications and organizing them within a single corporate repository. Almost invisibly, Orchestra creates a page for each conversation, arranges the strands of these conversations into logical discussion threads, and files them within centrally accessible team, group or project folders. Then by integrating these conversations and folders into the applications where people are working, Orchestra transforms collaboration into a feature as opposed to a product, making it possible for users to engage in enterprise-wide conversations from within the applications where the work is being done.

“People work in email because it’s convenient, it’s familiar and it’s reliable. By integrating with email, we take full advantage of these positive qualities while supplying the collaborative capabilities that traditional email lacks. The result: People can collaborate from within the comfort of email without changing the way they work,” says Vic Nishi, Director, Orchestra Software Division. “Orchestra does this by focusing on the conversation rather than on the tool. Conversations take place between people, so why must we confine them within single applications? Using Orchestra, users can view and contribute to the same conversation from within a Word document, a portal discussion page or via email. All three applications connect to the same conversation, so the user can choose to engage via the application and the entry point that they find most convenient.”

Orchestra transforms email into a powerful team collaboration tool. As team members send emails back and forth, Orchestra captures and organizes the contents of these emails onto threaded discussion pages. Conversations appear in folders within an Orchestra team or project site, and those same conversations can also appear within personal folders on each team member's MS Outlook file list. Replies made via e-mail or via the portal's discussion forum thread seamlessly onto the same page. Users continue to enjoy the convenience and familiarity of one-stop shopping via their inbox, while also providing the project manager with the benefit of having all project or team-relevant conversations organized on a team portal. In addition, using the free Software Developer's Kit (SDK), customers can connect Orchestra to any number of software applications that already reside within their corporate infrastructure. Orchestra can add conversation capabilities to any application where electronic conversations need to take place.

“We are excited about the enormous potential of Orchestra, a revolutionary technology that delivers on the promise of how collaboration was always meant to work,” says Sunil K. Sethi, XStream’s President and CEO. “This is truly a new kind of collaboration tool that will make it easier for everyone to work together more effectively on the Web.”

“Historically, collaboration in the software industry is treated as a product group. We don't agree. Instead, we believe that collaboration should be viewed as a set of features that should be available within all business software,” adds Dr. Johnson Kuruvila, XStream’s Vice President of Research and Development. “As a result, Orchestra has been designed with the capability of adding conversation capabilities to any application within a client’s corporate infrastructure. This means that team members can collaborate within the applications where the work is actually taking place, thus maximizing the level of convenience and minimizing the effort required to work together.”
